Frequently Asked Questions

VoIP doesn’t have to be complicated. JVoIP makes it simple.

Can I keep my number?

Yes, you can keep your number. FCC has carrier regulations in place which ensure you can take your number with you to any carrier. We will need your most recent statement, account holder information, and your account PIN if applicable. On average, it takes 2-3 weeks to process the porting request. Please note that we will charge $25 per port for local or toll-free numbers.

Why do you charge an E911 fee?

E911 is an FCC regulated required service by all telephone providers or carriers. This is a required fee in order to make sure your physical address associated with your account is routed to your local responders correctly in the event you need to contact emergency services. For your safety, you may not opt out of this feature. For more information, please see this page.

Will you charge any other fees?

Aside from the plan and options, you will be subject to local state and county taxes. There will also be other nominal federal surcharges and recovery fees. These fees vary based on your location.

Do you support international calling?

Currently, we are only able to terminate long distance calls business to the lower US and Canada. We do plan to support international outbound calling in the future. To receive updates on when service will be available internationally, sign up for our newsletter and visit our blog.

Are there any contracts?

No. You will be billed on a month-to-month basis. If you decide to cancel your services, we will require a 30-day notice before the effective date of cancellation. You will be responsible to pay for any amounts due through the effective date of termination.

Can I use my own desk phone?

Please reach out to us and we will determine if our network supports your current IP phone.

Do I need a computer to use VoIP?

No. JVoIP allows you to use VoIP services through any device provided you have a softphone (VoIP-based application) installed. Hard phones (physical) phones are preferable because of improved call-quality and reliability.

What is a softphone?

Softphone refers to the application used to make phone calls on your personal device through JVoIP. We have tested a few softphone applications and will gladly provide some recommendations. (Some softphone apps may be licensed and charged separately. Features vary from app to app).

What happens if my internet or power goes out?

VoIP requires a reliable internet connection. If your internet does not work, neither will your VoIP services. This also means you will not be able to call 911 in the case of an emergency. Therefore, we recommend having a backup power source at all times in the case of an outage. Please reach out to us directly for a list of recommended battery-backup hardware.

Will VoIP affect the quality of my phone calls?

No. Calls made through VoIP are generally of the same quality, if not better, than calls made through a traditional telephone service. Traditional phone lines rely on antiquated copper lines, whereas VoIP phones use internet lines, typically fiber-optic, which contain terabytes of data and run circles around old copper lines. However, it does depend on the reliability and speed of your internet connection. High-quality voice also depends on reliable voice codec exchanges between PBX systems (calling/receiving systems). If you experience poor call quality (jitter or static), we will investigate this for you.

Do you support all mobile apps?

Please note that mobile support and features are limited. Our network is designed for optimal use. As such, mobile devices are prone to limited network, bandwidth and connectivity. For example, iOS and Android devices do not allow applications to consume battery life and either block or tear-down persistent connections. This will affect SIP registration for popular VoIP mobile applications. Please reach out to us with your specific mobile needs and we will determine the best solution for your needs.

Can I buy a DID number from any state?

We can obtain local numbers in the lower US and Canada. We have a 95% coverage of area codes and we’re pretty sure we have you covered! Please reach out to us for more information.

Which three-digit toll free numbers can I order or port?

We can process the following toll free codes: 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844, and 833.

Will you count usage minutes on the Freelancer Plan when dialing toll-free numbers?

No. The Freelancer Plan comes with 200 minutes. When making outbound calls to a toll-free line, usage minutes will not be counted. Usage minutes will count when dialing local or long distance lines, or when receiving calls.
